Ewan?s marathon gesture for the homeless

main_ewan_marathonTruro-based Ewan McClymont, head of the Grants Advice Service for Cornwall Marine Network member Bishop Fleming’s five South West offices, completed the 2008 Flora London Marathon in a time of 3:56:53 to finish in position 8,885.

In doing so, he has raised at least £1,100 for the charity St Petroc’s Society, which provides accommodation and housing-related support services for the single homeless.

It was only the second marathon run by 44-year-old Ewan, who completed the Duchy Marathon last year and vowed “never again unless it’s London!”

And it was a very different form of money-raising venture from his professional activities – in which he has put together grants packages totaling more than £5 million for businesses in Cornwall and Devon over the past six years.

“After months of training, the one thing I had not prepared for was the incredible support from the crowd,” said Ewan. “They kept me going and made it a truly memorable experience. “The heavens opened for half an hour, but the event was just fantastic with an amazing atmosphere. Afterwards I went into a pub and watched my team, Manchester United, beat Arsenal – so my day was well and truly made!”

Bishop Fleming, one of the region’s largest independent firms of chartered accountants, was the main source of fund-raising for Ewan’s latest marathon bid, through its partners, staff and clients. The firm also supported him by agreeing to flexible working hours, enabling him to go on early morning training runs.

The St Petroc’s service helps the single homeless in Cornwall to take their all-important first step back into the community.
