Cornwall boasts some of the most spectacular beaches in the UK and when the conditions surfare right many of them offer fantastic surfing at every level - from the complete beginner to the very advanced.

Whether you choose to take to the waves on a longboard, shortboard, bodyboard, kneeboard, kayak, surf-ski or simply to swim out and bodysurf back in, there's fun to be had in the waves on many of the county's beaches.

While the county offers the sort of world-class waves that make it the venue for competitions, there is often a gentle wave, ideal for beginners and those wanting a mellow day on the waves, to be found somewhere.

Prevailing winds and sea conditions have conspired to make Cornwall's north coast the traditional centre of the surf industry. It is home to an array of businesses set up to help people who want to go surfing whatever your needs.

The north coast offers a range of accommodation suited specifically to the needs of the surfer. Newquay and Perranporth, for example, are home to many surf lodges and are well served with shops and services that can help your surfing trip to go smoothly whether you need a simple wetsuit repair or a completely new board.

To master the basics of this technical sport it is advisable to invest in surf lessons. They are the best, and most enjoyable, way to get up and running in safety and you will not need to break the bank. You should be able to find a package that includes the hire of a board and wetsuit and will cater for you and your friends should you decide to visit in a group.

It's important to remember that surf school is not just for beginners. Cornwall is brimming with talented surf coaches who can teach you how to improve you moves and hone your skills, use the search box at the side of the page to find specific information on surf schools and the services they offer.

Some Cornish breaks are so well known for their surf conditions that they bring wave riders in from across the world. Watergate Bay and Fistral Beach, for example have played host to both national and international championships - the red-letter days of the surfing calendar.

Cornwall enjoys a variety of surf types - there are reef breaks and beach breaks spread out along the north and south coasts. With coastline facing three directions the county also has surf in almost any weather conditions.

There are also breaks that benefit from good lifeguard cover - something you need to bear in mind especially when you are learning - and there are also out of the way surf spots that experts have to search for to find. When they get there they find the reward of a superb break all to themselves.
