The answer lies in the latest statistics which have been unveiled by the Office for National Statistics showing the new face of Britain.

Alex Lake, Cornwall Enterprise’s organiser for the 2006 Interceltic Watersports Festival which is being hosted by Cornwall in July, explains: “Nationally, there is a been huge growth in the number of people participating in watersports and for Cornwall this is obviously great news. Not only do these water enthusiasts spend significant sums of money on equipment and clothing, but in addition their choice of holiday destination is very much determined by the proximity to lots of water!”

Carole Theobald, Cornwall Brand Manager, said: “The sea, coastline and marine leisure opportunities are a key element in Cornwall’s distinctiveness. Cornwall’s marine industry has historically been essential to the economy – and today it is still full of opportunity. Cornwall’s marine industry is worth £120 million, 13% of the UK, with 700 marine related businesses, 3,120 direct jobs and an estimated further 10,000 indirect jobs.”

The 2006 Festival provides the perfect opportunity to showcase Cornwall to Europe as the perfect location for a whole range of water based activities including surfing, sailing, kayaking and rowing. It also gives us the opportunity to promote, through the Marine Market, the regions broad range of marine businesses producing everything from clothing to yachts to holidays.

Tim Bowerbank, Marketing Manager of Cornwall Marine Network, said: “There will be something for everyone. It is a chance for hardened sailors to further their knowledge and to purchase new kit, for watersports fanatics to try out a different offshore pursuit and for all those dreamers who just want to get out on the water and feel the wind on their cheeks.”

Among the exhibitors are Cornish-based chandlers - Challenger Marine, C-bear outdoor clothing suppliers and Gecko safety helmet manufacturers, who will all be demonstrating and selling their products.

Local yacht charterers The Real Boat Company and Golden Black Sailing will be promoting their extensive packages, from calm coastal cruises to exhilarating ocean sailing. There will be the opportunity to clamber on board the revolutionary Macgregor 26 power sailor by Macgregor Yachts - an interesting cross between a yacht and a powerboat!

Adventurous visitors will be invited to get their feet wet with ‘Have-a-Go’ activity sessions run by qualified watersports instructors. Experts will be on hand to give advice on technique, equipment and training and provide information about membership of local clubs.

Plans are now well underway for the 2006 event which takes place from 24 - 29 July 2006 at a number of locations in Cornwall including Looe, Falmouth, Gwithian and Stithians. For more information please visit www.intercelticwatersportsfestival.com.
